MAYBELENE
by deanmelbourne
this is the first painting ive completed for a while! It was great to work through the whole process and despite what i think of it, it is done! Makes it easier to move on to the next idea.
In the past the temptation to predict the way a painting will go and miss out the pain of failure i would just move on to the next idea without seeing it through.
So she is done, and Im showing her to you ! double brave i think.
Right near the end I started to get a feel for what i thought the character was like and her story came through.
thanks to everyone who has already left encouragement on facebook!

why i love maybelene:
I think I generally shy away from paintings that are bold or aggresive in some way – not knowing what to do with them. (I have to say I’m a bit intimidated by the Lilly painting with the changes shes going through at the moment lol!). I know where i am with wistful or vulnerable emotions and I love how maybelene is showing her vulnerability, tension and maybe pain with her hands and face (her eyes on the real life painting pull you in insistently way more than you can see on the pic here). The fact that she looks such a strong character makes the exposure of those emotions so much more impacting and lets you feel like you are getting to really see a significant moment in her life. That feels quite voyeuristic and intimate which i like.
Okay well thats what I think – what do other people think? Time to share.
