I am finding that making larger painted sketches on canvas is helping me move forward far more quickly than working away in a sketchbook. I think that I have known really what I want to do for a while and sketch booking has really gone around in circles. Getting back to painting the figure and thinking about form and light/shadow is helping me get unstuck.
Again the image itself is not so important. It is about setting challenges to my technique and allowing me to edit and adjust to get the feel that I want. It is still in progress and this stage represents perhaps two hours work.

My idea in blogging this is just to share my progress as it happens rather then only when things are finished. Just making things public helps me figure out what I really think about them. difficult but rewarding process. Especially if i get some feedback!

Hey I think this is going well! Love the contrasts of the dramtic lighting. Although similar to the last female figure sketch you posted I prefer this but can’t put my finger on why.

thanks guys! I am pleased with the sense of weight in this one. but I think the brush work has slipped back to old habits at times. Its a bit to rythmical and gives a softer feel. the other one seems a bit grittier maybe. I will try and get that back as i finish it. thanks for you comments
